Cards sign Felipe Lopez

by Nick August 6, 2008

The Cardinals claimed infielder Felipe Lopez off of waivers from the Washington Nationals late last night.  Lopez can play second base, shortstop, and third base.  It is also purported that he can play outfield, but I’d prefer he stay within the diamond. This is kind of a ‘bleh’ move, certainly not one to overwhelm the [...]

Please welcome…

by Nick August 6, 2008

By now you’ve probably seen the post below, written by avid PH8 reader StLCards. Given my recent (hopefully not too regular) travel schedule for work, I’ve asked StLCards to contribute some posts here and there when he feels he’s got something to tell you folks. I appreciate what he has already added to the site [...]

And the Magic Number is…

by StLCards August 5, 2008

5 Pretty obvious that the number 5 would be significant for the Cardinals as one of the best hitters in the game wears that number for the Redbirds. But I’m talking about another number 5. This goes back to a post game interview when the bullpen let yet another game slip away. In that interview [...]

Sunday Spitballs – 08.02.08

by Nick August 3, 2008

My apologies for the lack of posts the last few days, a spotty internet outage has kept me barely connected. Dear Russ Springer: Shane Victorino murdered that pitch the first time you threw it. What made you think it was a good idea to throw it again? My man-crush on Ryan Ludwick is growing by [...]

Brad Thompson saves the day

by Nick July 31, 2008

Is there a statistic for a guy who comes in, usually in long relief, and just continues to give his team a chance to win, often times following a short start (whether because of injury or poor performance)? If so, I’d be willing to bet that Brad Thompson would have a favorable number in that [...]

My bold Carpenter prediction

by Nick July 30, 2008

Prompted by loyal reader StLCards, here is my Chris Carpenter prediction for tonight: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K I don’t know if Carp is on a pitch count, so that could radically affect the line. I think he does just enough to give the Cards a chance to win, which [...]

A tale of two offenses

by Nick July 29, 2008

Which one will show up tonight? The Cards’ offense has recently exploded for ten runs on Saturday versus the Mets (albeit in extra time) and for twelve last night versus the Braves (albeit versus a rookie, stop-gap starter).  Last night they were even without their slugging centerfielder, Rick Ankiel.  That could be an ongoing absence, [...]

Sunday Spitballs – 07.27.08 (The Monday Version)

by Nick July 28, 2008

Sorry for my tardiness with this one, a long weekend out of town left me exhausted and unable to stomach writing about the week that was in Cardinal baseball.  Alas, here we go… How will Cardinal fans remember the Anthony Reyes era in St Louis?  As much as I was rooting for the guy, the [...]

Let’s play Tony LaRussa

by Nick July 26, 2008

Note:  Preprogrammed thread written prior to Friday night’s game – so this does not take into account any further bullpen implosions. Assume no trades are made – make any assumptions you like with players already in the organization.  Set your ideal pitching staff for the rest of the season. Mine is like this: SP Chris [...]
