BREAKING! Jeff Luhnow named General Manager of Houston Astros

Late night Twitter rumors are fun!

And it’s not Albert Pujols

Tonight, the following Tweet came across my screen:

@Ellen_Prinzi: CONGRATULATIONS to @jluhnow [Jeff Luhnow] on being named GM for the Houston Astros. Well deserved, he was the best boss I ever had

Obviously from the text you can see that Mrs. Prinzi is a former employee of the Cardinals.  She also happens to be the wife of current employee, strength and conditioning coordinator, Pete Prinzi.  Was this tweet a mistake, misinformation?  Or was it jumping the gun on information not meant for public consumption?

Please let me be clear that this is currently rumor based upon the above Tweet, which has since been deleted.  I have been unable to find any further information confirming or denying this rumor, but I’m trying.

Another tweet, this one from Cards ballpark DJ and music extraordinaire, Damon Oliver:

@damonoliver: Congratulations to Jeff Luhnow. Helluva guy and the new G.M. of the Houston Astros.

My attempt to follow up on that with Oliver, asking if he had that news on any authority resulted in the following response:

@damonoliver: To be announced tomorrow, 2pm according to JC Corcoran. 😛

Take these for what you will – and for what they are right now – rumors.  I’ll see what I can find out…

UPDATE: Not only has the original Tweet now been deleted, the Twitter account is private.

Others are picking up on the story:

This tweet from Angela Parker @the26thman was picked up by national baseball guys @bnightengale and @brentsgambill, as well as local writer @davidmwilhelm.  Obviously Ms. Parker has a bit more credibility than I…

UPDATE – CONFIRMED!  Now Alyson Footer, Astros Director of Social Media (@alysonfooter) has confirmed the Jeff Luhnow hire by the Astros.

Great news for Mr. Luhnow, congrats sir.  Very happy for his opportunity.  Not sure I like this as a Cards fan…

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
