“GIANT SLUGGER” SETS HOT DOG RECORD AT BUSCH STADIUM Cardinals Debut A Two Foot Long One Pound $26 Hot Dog To Celebrate July As National Hot Dog Month “Giant Slugger” Celebrity & Fan Hot Dog Eating Contest Slated for 4th of July |
ST. LOUIS, MO. (July 2, 2012) – To help celebrate National Hot Dog month, as well as St. Louis’ proud heritage as the birthplace of the all-American delicacy that has become synonymous with a great outing at the ballpark, the St. Louis Cardinals are selling — for a limited time only– the largest hot dog in the history of Busch Stadium.
The “Giant Slugger”, expertly prepared by the team’s concessionaire Delaware North Sportservice, is a one pound, two foot long all-beef hot dog. When fully loaded with all the fixings (two full cups of chili, nacho cheese, grilled onions and jalapenos) the Giant Slugger weighs in at a remarkable 2.75 pounds. In a tip of the cap to local history, Fazios Bakery was tapped to craft a custom bun for this historic dog. Legend has it that the first hot dog appeared in St. Louis in 1880 with the invention of the bun by a local baker, while the “hot dog” name traces to the 1904 World’s Fair. Some believe the first association of hot dogs and baseball began in 1893 with the National League St. Louis Browns (who eventually became the St. Louis Cardinals).
The Giant Slugger will be available throughout July in Ford Plaza. Priced at $26, the Giant Slugger is good value considering it is larger than five jumbo dogs and may be loaded with toppings at no extra charge.
“You can easily feed a family of four with just one hot dog,” said Vicki Bryant, Vice President of Event Services and Merchandising, “the big challenge is getting everyone to agree on toppings.”
To help introduce fans to the Giant Slugger, the team is sponsoring a Giant Slugger Hot Dog eating contest at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4th in the Ford Plaza. Contestants will participate to see who can finish the Giant Slugger the fastest, if at all – with a one hour time limit set. This “fan versus food” or “man versus dog” competition will feature local radio personalities, Zach McCrite from ESPN 101 and Kevin the Intern from the Phillips & Company Morning Show on Y98. Fans can volunteer to participate at the Ford Plaza prior to the contest by entering their name in a random drawing. The Grand Prize winner will receive four tickets to a game, a customized team jersey and an autographed baseball; the runner up will receive 8 game tickets with $100 of Cards Cash, while the third place winner will receive 4 tickets to a game & a food voucher. All contestants will receive a free t-shirt, free coupon for one Giant Slugger hot dog and the pride of knowing they were part of Busch Stadium hot dog history.
Editor’s note: I must haz one of these….
