Mike MacDougal promoted from Memphis, Salas optioned

According to Cards Director of Media Relations Brian Bartow (on Twitter), relief pitcher Mike MacDougal has been called up from Memphis.

MacDougal last pitched in the big leagues for the Washington Nationals last season.

MacDougal has battled control issues and injuries throughout his career, often bouncing back and forth between the bigs and the minors and never really finding a place with any one team.

By my count, the Cards appear to have one spot available on their 40-man roster for MacDougal.

Unless there are more moves to follow that would create room on the active roster, someone’s headed to Memphis from New York. I haven’t seen word yet on who that is, but my purely speculative guess is that Fernando Salas is sent out after throwing 41 pitches in last evening’s game against the Mets.

Update 1 – Fox Sports Midwest also indicating on Twitter that MacDougal is up with the big club.

Update 2 – The Cardinals confirm on Twitter that McDougal is up and Salas down.

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
