St. Louis Cardinals @ San Francisco Giants

TV: Fox Sports Midwest

Probable Starters: Adam Wainwright vs. Barry Zito

The Cardinals dropped an ugly one last night — including two errors, and a .083 BA with RISP — against the always nasty Tim Lincecum. Tonight is a 12-6 dreamers delight, as Adam Wainwright and Barry Zito, two of the nastiest hook-throwers in the game will take the hill.

Breaking down Zito:

2010 Pitch types (Velocity/wRAA/Frequency) – Fastball (86 mph/3.6/53%) Slider (80 mph/0.2/13%) Curveball (73 mph/2.8/18%) Changeup (75 mph/0.4/16%)

Inside Edge:

ALL FIRST PITCH EARLY TWO STRIKES AHEAD BEHIND VS RHB VS LHB OPP BA
Fastballs 56% 60% 54% 50% 46% 67% 55% 58% .238
Curves 21% 17% 21% 31% 36% 6% 20% 26% .214
Sliders 4% 3% 4% 5% 5% 4% 2% 12% .204
Change Ups 18% 18% 20% 14% 13% 23% 23% 4% .268
Other 1% 1% 1% 0% 0% 1% 1% 0% .385
Totals 22634 5755 13204 6253 7672 5738 17383 5251 .23

As you can see from the data above, Zito is having success getting ahead with his fastball, putting him into position to use his secondary plus pitch, his curveball, as a way to get batters out with contact. The homer happy Cardinals will probably have to find another way to produce runs tonight, as Zito hasn’t given up one long-ball in his first three starts of 2010. Let’s take a look at some specific match-up’s of note…

Who’s hot against Zito?

Albert Pujols: 5-10, .500, 2 HR, 5 BB.
Felipe Lopez: 5-15, .333, 1 HR, 1 BB

Who’s cold against Zito?

Matt Holliday: 4-22, .182, 2 HR, 5 K

… Enjoy the game

Baseball enthusiast. I analyze the game from what I consider a fair perspective: a mix of numbers and observations. The 1967 Cardinals were really awesome.
