BBA HoF Ballot Discussion: Lee Smith

Lee Smith

Nick: Lee Smith is one of the primary reasons why I can see myself leaning toward voting for Edgar Martinez.

Closer is just as specialized a position in the game as designated hitter, and Smith was one of the best.

The all-time leader in saves when he retired, Smith finished second in Cy Young voting in 1991 with the Cardinals when he led the league in saves with 47.

The guy was just lights out when he came in the game – a dominant player at his position (closer) during his time in the league.

I’ll vote Smith (are our ten votes exhausted yet?)

Josh: Closers are ever harder to pin-point than DH bids since they are selective in use and not on any kind of schedule. With that in mind, Lee Smith not being inducted yet still boggles my mind. Check this one up to mystery in my opinion and give the man a Cards’ hat for his plaque! Actually that may become a fun game of sorts for some HOF’ers. Much like Big Mac, how do you decide which cap is worn for ever and ever?

Maybe that last question is a new post in and of itself – which caps do these guys wear?

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
