Nick: Fred McGriff was always a solid hitter. Never terribly flashy with the glove, but could be counted on for his 30 HR and 90 RBI every season.
He piled up 493 career home runs before age caught up with him – an outstanding accomplishment.
Unfortunately for the Crime Dog, I just don’t get the HOF vibe from him. I could go on and on with numbers that don’t really stack up (despite the pile of HR), but I just can’t see him in the elite 1% of all-time.
Josh: I really liked the Crime Dog for most of his career but was put off by his Jose Canseco-like attempt to keep playing solely for the numbers. Yes, I’m being picky but this is the HOF we are talking about. McGriff actually would get more consideration from me if he had stopped trying to hang on so long, something I appreciated about McGwire.
Sorry Fred, this isn’t your year.
