The revelation that Kyle Lohse is closer to returning than anyone thought has me pondering when John Smoltz should be moved to his permanent spot with St. Louis. It really has nothing to do with K-Mac last night or Motte for the last couple of months but rather October.
Don’t get me wrong — I want Smoltz to pitch well while starting, but he is much more valuable in the 7th or 8th opposite Trever Miller. The Cardinals have few holes heading into September, but the most glaring is a shut-down RH in front of Ryan Franklin.
Much like during our Radio Shows, I’m ready and willing to defend my point against all comers. Post your best option below or via Twitter as now brings the best time to settle the debate. Smoltz is currently handling the Nationals (at least going into the third inning) and made the Padres look silly. The problem with that, of course, is that neither one of those teams has a prayer of playing in the post season.
For St. Louis to take home the championship, the bullpen needs to be set in September. The division series or later can not be the time to start tinkering with a lot of younger arms. Let Smoltz take over as soon as Lohse returns, smoothing the transition for the rest of the relief corps.
It is time for me to sign off and enjoy my adult beverage during what I hope is one of the last times the Cardinals need Smoltz for more than one inning.
