Kyle Lohse for Joe Mather?

by on June 3, 2009 · 0 comments

Kyle Lohse left tonight’s game with further “discomfort” in his pitching elbow, likely (hopefully) stemming from the pitch that hit him in that right elbow a week-and-a-half or so back.

Lohse’s lingering injury means Joel Pineiro is going to be counted on to make his next start as he claims he can.  Brad Thompson will likely be needed to make Lohse’s next scheduled start.

Assuming Lohse is destined for a stint on the Disabled List, who is the likely call-up candidate?

I don’t think the Cards are interested in bringing back Mitchell Boggs or PJ Walters (pure conjecture on my part), and in carrying thirteen pitchers in recent weeks, they have the flexibility to disable Lohse and bring up a hitter (which many would argue they desperately need).

Perhaps Joe Mather will get the call?  Joey Bombs is hitting .421 at Memphis since his wrist surgery to remove a cyst, and chipped in with a home run and a single in Memphis’ loss tonight.

Cards could certainly use some power in the lineup, from either side of the plate, and Mather can play third base – a position many Cardinal fans are clamoring to fill with anyone but Joe Thurston or Brian Barden.

Got better ideas for a call-up?  Hit up the comments section (psst, keep scrolling down).

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
