RIP Harry Kalas, Phillies radio voice

“We lost our voice today…” — Phillies team president David Montgomery

One of the great voices in baseball passed away today in Washington DC.

Long time Phillies broadcaster and also voice of NFL Films and the Puppy Bowl (which I couldn’t help but enjoy, seriously), Kalas had a distinctive voice for Phillies fans similar to our own late Jack Buck or the Dodgers’ Vin Scully.

On The DL Podcast has audio of Kalas’ call of the last three outs of the 2008 World Series, clearly displaying the excitement in Kalas’ voice and how much he truly loved the team.

His signature home run call “Outta here!” is a classic, but my favorite Kalas call will always be Mike Schmidt’s 500th home run.  (The text here doesn’t do it justice.)

“Swing and a long drive, there it is, number 500! The career 500th home run for Michael Jack Schmidt!”

[Edit 04.15.09 – I finally was able to find Mike Schmidt’s 500th home run video.  Just so happens it came with a bunch of other great Kalas calls, watch below.]

RIP Harry.

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
