Yeah, even with Kerry Wood now available, I am still leaning toward Chris Perez.

Hoffman not much left, methinks. Wood is going to want a big multi-year deal that I'm not sure is worth it, given his injury history. Izzy isn't the answer, certainly, but I could see him coming back on an incentive-laden deal to be a mid-relief guy.

Who knows?

I think Hoffman would have to come at a very good price before the Cards could take a chance. Seems to be some concern about what he has left in the tank.

On the other hand, I see the Cubs have now signed Gregg from FL.

I'm starting to get the feeling now that our 'new' closer is going to be none other than Izzy. He'll probably sign a deal favorable to the Cards when no other teams express serious interest.

I'm choosing to reserve judgement until after the Winter Meetings, but something needs to be done if the Cards hope to compete this season (not to mention keep Pujols happy!).

Trevor Hoffman on the radar?

I can't begin to express how upset I am at the Cards not getting Holliday. So far all we have is subtraction. Are we destined to go the way of a reclamation project for both SS and 2B? Are we going to once again wait and see what we can get after all the big name trading is over with? Are we just going to ignore Tony's plea for an 'impact bat'?

Right now we still have too many OF's and not enough infielders or pitchers. To me it is an easy decision to trade multiple OFs for an upgrade somewhere. Maybe they should try going for Brian Roberts? That would be a huge addition. I'm guessing that they aren't even seriously considering a run at Roberts if the Cubs couldn't get him last year. Possibly that means Orlando Hudson could be the target for 2B. More likely they'll go after someone like Scott Hairston, Jr. who should become a FA Friday. I really wouldn't mind seeing them try to swing a deal for Robinson Cano who is reportedly on the block with the Yankees.

I'd be very surprised if the Cards would pony up for the years and the cash Fuentes supposedly desires.

Schumaker is fine as status quo, but I think it's safe to argue they could upgrade his spot in the lineup. My only beef with replacing him is that you lose a 'leadoff-type' hitter. Not saying Schu is a dead-on leadoff guy, but he fits the mold better than anyone else on the current Cards roster.

I think the Cardinals would happily keep Ludwick and his cost-controlled salary, on the assumption he can replicate 2008. But at the same time, they'd be foolish not to listen to offers on him. I don't expect Luddy to be moved for the sake of moving him - if it's for a Holliday-type, hell yes he's available.

Holliday gone, but Fuentes remains. I would hope to see most current Cards remain in STL. To me, there's nothing wrong with Skip and Felipe. I would go for LHP relief first, start rotation second, middle/inf impact bat third. It still looks as if the Cards are willing to deal Luddy, unless that just all the media looking for a deal to occur.

Kirk - first, my sincere apologies for not seeing that this was up to be posted. Usually I get an e-mail...not sure what happened this time.

As for your ideas (and I realize my lack of attention seems to have rendered these thoughts past tense, with Holliday apparently going to Oakland) - I am with you. Totally on board with having taken a shot at Holliday.

Here's the problem - I think the Rockies kept saying they would take X package, but then tried to up the ante Y.

Mo stated today that he was dissatisfied with the negotiation/leaking tactics used by the Rockies.

Couple of other notes - Fuentes is a free agent, I don't envision the Cards giving him his asking price. Felipe Lopez is also a free agent who for whatever reason, the Cards don't feel like re-upping.

Finally, I doubt Glaus is on anyone's mind as a shortstop. There were significant questions about his defense at 3B when he came over, much less SS. I think the grass had a big impact on his ability to flash some leather at third, but I wouldn't move that big body to short.
