Wellemeyer is NL Pitcher of the Month for May

Todd Wellemeyer is the National League’s Pitcher of the Month for May.

Stop.  Sit down.  Let that sink in for a minute.

It’s not that he isn’t deserving.  But the Cardinals got this guy off of the scrap heap.  He has pitched fabulously in the month of May.  Dave Duncan and his magic seem to have taken hold again.

Here’s hoping Welley can keep it up into June and deep into the season.  Remember the wall Braden Looper hit last season after putting up a career high in innings by mid-June in his first year as a starter.  I think it will be an interesting scenario to keep an eye on.  If he continues to pitch well, going six innings deep in games on a regular basis, I think he can find himself a long-term slot in the Cards rotation.

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
