Remember that feeling you had in ’98…

…when Mark McGwire would come to the plate, usually in a big-time game situation, and you knew, you just knew that Big Mac was going to hit one out?

I remember it vividly. It was almost as if McGwire made it his personal mission to make sure that everyone who saw a Cards game in person that year saw him hit a home run.

I’m having that feeling again – and this time I hate it. I have that feeling every time someone steps out of the Cards’ bullpen trying to protect a lead.

Today it was Jason Bay. I mean, ok, the inning was already bad enough when Izzy walked Eye Chart to lead off the inning. Then newly anointed Cardinal Killer ™ Ronny Paulino singled. Then Izzy threw away the bunt.

My stomach started getting butterflies – I knew it. I knew the home run was coming.

Writing about the Cardinals and other loosely associated topics since 2008, I've grown tired of the April run-out only to disappoint Cardinal fans everywhere by mid-May. I do not believe in surrendering free outs.
